I live on 3 acres in the high prairie with scattered Ponderosa Pines 25 miles SE of Denver. My husband does most of the yardwork, but I have a new 12'x 12' raised no-dig (or lasagna) vegetable garden.

Self-planting flowers in the Rockies
October 31, 2009 by lynnincolorado
Hello!
I just read the Self-planting article and wanted to share an experience. Many years ago we lived at 9,200 feet elevation near Pikes Peak. In mid-June the first year, I purchased a variety of annuals to plant in containers on our deck so I could see what worked at that elevation. Quite a few flowers did very well, although the snapdragons didn't bloom until moved inside prior to the first frost in September.
The next Spring, PANSIES started poking up through several inches of SNOW below our deck even before the anxiously awaited pasqueflowers (see link) that I was told would be the first wildflower we'd see! This continued every spring. Dusty Miller was another that would come up repeatedly, but seeing pansies come up through the snow our first Spring in the mountains was quite a surprise!
